Export to Word, PDF or another file format in Pages on iPad

To save a copy of a Pages document in another format, you export it in the new format. This is useful when you need to send the document to people who are using different software. Any changes you make to the exported document don’t affect the original.

If you added marks or changes using smart annotations, they won’t appear in exported Word, EPUB or plain text (TXT) documents. You can export a document to PDF or image file with or without smart annotations and comments.

Note: If the original file has a password, it applies to copies exported in PDF and Word formats.

Save a copy of a Pages document in another format

1. Open the document, then tap .
2. Tap Export, then tap a format:
   • PDF: These files can be opened and sometimes edited with applications like Preview and Adobe Acrobat. If you added image, drawing, audio or video descriptions for assistive technology (for example, VoiceOver), they’re automatically exported. If your document contains smart annotations or comments and you want to include them in the PDF, turn on the corresponding option, then tap Export in the top-right corner of Layout Options.
   • Word: These files can be opened and edited with Microsoft Word in .docx format.
   • EPUB: Use this format to make your document readable in an ebook reader (such as Apple Books). For more information about the EPUB options, see the task below.
   • Plain Text: Body text is exported as unformatted text. Text boxes, shapes, images, lines, tables and graphs aren’t exported. Page layout documents can’t be exported in TXT format.
   • Rich Text Format (RTF): Body text and tables are exported as formatted (RTF) text and tables. If the document has text boxes, shapes, lines and graphs that can be exported, they’re exported as images and the document is exported in RTFD format. Other applications may not be able to open an RTFD file. Page layout documents can’t be exported in RTF or RTFD format.
   • Images: Choose the pages you want to export as images and select an image format for your document. The higher quality the image, the larger the file size. Use the controls to include comments and smart annotations.
   • Pages Template: Your document is saved as a template in the Template Chooser. You can also share your template. To learn more, see Create and manage custom templates.
3. Tap one of the options for sending, saving or posting the document.
4. Choose a location or provide the requested information (an email address if you’re sending an email, for example), then send or post the copy.

Export a book or other document in EPUB format

To make it possible to read your document in an ebook reader (such as Apple Books), you can export it in EPUB format.

1. Open the document, then tap .
2. Tap Export, tap EPUB, then enter the requested information:
   • Title and Author: Enter the title and the author name you want readers to see if you publish it.
   • Cover: Use the first page of the document or choose an image file (save the file in iCloud Drive first).
   • Layout: For a word processing document, you can select “Fixed layout” to preserve the layout of the page, or Re-flowable, so readers can adjust the font size and style (which may change how much content is visible on each page). Page layout documents can use only a fixed layout.
   • Category and Language: Tap Advanced Options, then assign a category for the EPUB document and indicate the language of the document.
   • Use Table of Contents: Tap Advanced Options, then deselect this option if you don’t want to include the table of contents you created.
   • Embed Fonts: Tap Advanced Options, then select this option if you want to include TrueType and OpenType fonts in your EPUB document.
   • Apple Books Compatibility: Tap Advanced Options, then select this option to convert incompatible movies to images so you can offer this book on Apple Books. Unsupported audio files are removed.
3. Tap one of the options for sending, saving or posting the document.
4. Choose a location or provide the requested information (an email address if you’re sending an email, for example), then send or post the copy.

To make your book available for purchase or download, from Apple Books, you can publish it to Apple Books directly from Pages. An EPUB file is created during the process — you don’t need to export the book in EPUB format first.
